ANALYSIS OF IDIOMATIC EMOTION EXPRESSIONS DETECTED FROM ONLINE MOVIE REVIEWS

    Get PDF
A large number of idiomatic emotion expressions in Korean are composed of certain nouns of human body parts accompanied by selected predicates, which represent a ‘physiological metonymy’ of sentiment (Lakoff 1987, Ungerer & Schmid 1996)or instance, kasum-i ttwita literally means a physiological reaction (i.e. one’s heart beat) but also can represent the emotion like being thrilled to bits. We compared idiomatic emotion expressions used in English online movie reviews and those observed in Korean, and noticed that the nouns of body parts such as kasum ‘heart’, maum ‘mind’ or nwun ‘eyes’ emerge frequently in both languages, whereas ekkay ‘shoulder’, kancang ‘intestines’ or ppye ‘bones’ seem to be rather reserved for Korean emotion expressions. In this study, we extract idiomatic emotion expressions based on the 13 nouns of body parts listed by Lim (2001) from Korean online movie reviews. For instance, nouns such as meli ‘head’, ip ‘mouth’ or simcang ‘cardia’ are frequently used for constituting the emotion expressions of POSITIVE values as shown in ip-ul tamwul-swu epsta ‘be with open mouth (with delight) these nouns hardly occur in NEGATIVE emotion expressions, which is not predictable from their semantic features, but reveals their lexical idiosyncrasy. The frequent emotion expressions observed in online movie reviews will be analyzed and classified according to their semantic properties. We will show what salient traits of Korean emotion expressions can be remarked in current online subjective documents such as users’ reviews, blogs or opinion texts

A Second-order bias model for the Logarithmic Halo Mass Density

We present an analytic model for the local bias of dark matter halos in a LCDM universe. The model uses the halo mass density instead of the halo number density and is searched for various halo mass cuts, smoothing lengths, and redshift epoches. We find that, when the logarithmic density is used, the second-order polynomial can fit the numerical relation between the halo mass distribution and the underlying matter distribution extremely well. In this model the logarithm of the dark matter density is expanded in terms of log halo mass density to the second order. The model remains excellent for all halo mass cuts (from M_{cut}=3\times10^{11}to to 3\times10^{12}h^{-1}M_{\odot}),smoothingscales(from), smoothing scales (from R=5h^{-1}MpctoMpc to 50h^{-1}$Mpc), and redshift ranges (from z=0 to 1.0) considered in this study. The stochastic term in the relation is found not entirely random, but a part of the term can be determined by the magnitude of the shear tensor.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication on Ap

Public Health Challenges of Electronic Cigarettes in South Korea

    Get PDF
Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarrettes) were recently introduced and advertised as a smoking cession device in South Korea. As the social norm to quit smoking has gained hold in the country, the number of e-cigarette users is growing rapidly. This phenomenon should be urgently considered, because of the lack of research that has been conducted to examine the safety of e-cigarettes and its efficacy as a smoking cessation aid

Anoikis Resistance: An Essential Prerequisite for Tumor Metastasis

    Get PDF
Metastasis is a multistep process including dissociation of cancer cells from primary sites, survival in the vascular system, and proliferation in distant target organs. As a barrier to metastasis, cells normally undergo an apoptotic process known as “anoikis,” a form of cell death due to loss of contact with the extracellular matrix or neighboring cells. Cancer cells acquire anoikis resistance to survive after detachment from the primary sites and travel through the circulatory and lymphatic systems to disseminate throughout the body. Because recent technological advances enable us to detect rare circulating tumor cells, which are anoikis resistant, currently, anoikis resistance becomes a hot topic in cancer research. Detailed molecular and functional analyses of anoikis resistant cells may provide insight into the biology of cancer metastasis and identify novel therapeutic targets for prevention of cancer dissemination. This paper comprehensively describes recent investigations of the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying anoikis and anoikis resistance in relation to intrinsic and extrinsic death signaling, epithelial-mesenchymal transition, growth factor receptors, energy metabolism, reactive oxygen species, membrane microdomains, and lipid rafts

A Preliminary Report of Crosslinguistic Evidence on Efficacy of Semantic-Complexity Based Naming Treatment in Korean Aphasics

    Get PDF
The current study investigated the efficacy of semantic-complexity based naming treatment in Korean participants with aphasia. Results suggested that both participants showed small to medium effect sizes in the trained items. However, generalization effects were greater in the participant who received treatment on the atypical items first, than the participant who was initiated on the typical items. These results are consistent with the previous findings in English-speaking aphasic participants (Kiran & Thompson, 2003; Kiran, 2008). Preliminary findings of two Korean participants with aphasia added crosslinguistic evidence on efficacy of the semantic complexity based naming treatment

Adiponectin is Associated with Impaired Fasting Glucose in the Non-Diabetic Population

    Get PDF
OBJECTIVES: Adiponectin is strongly associated with diabetes in the Western population. However, whether adiponectin is independently associated with impaired fasting glucose (IFG) in the non-obese population is unknown. METHODS: The serum adiponectin, insulin resistance (IR), and waist circumference (WC) of 27,549 healthy Koreans were measured. Individuals were then classified into tertile groups by gender. IFG was defined as a fasting serum glucose of 100-125 mg/dL without diabetes. IR was calculated using the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). The association of adiponectin and IFG was determined using logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: WC and adiponectin were associated with IFG in both men and women. However, the association of WC with IFG was attenuated in both men and women after adjustment for the HOMA-IR. Adiponectin was still associated with IFG after adjustment for and stratification by HOMA-IR in men and women. Strong combined associations of IR and adiponectin with IFG were observed in men and women. Multivariate adjusted odds ratios (ORs) (95% confidence interval [CI]) among those in the highest tertile of IR and the lowest tertile of adiponectin were 9.8 (7.96 to 12.07) for men and 24.1 (13.86 to 41.94) for women. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that adiponectin is strongly associated with IFG, and point to adiponectin as an additional diagnostic biomarker of IFG in the non-diabetic population.ope

Dietary Intake and Serum Levels of Iron in Relation to Oxidative Stress in Breast Cancer Patients

    Get PDF
Iron may induce oxidative stress via production of reactive oxygen species, facilitating mammary carcinogenesis. This study investigated the role of iron in relation to oxidative stress as a potential risk factor in the development of breast cancer (BC). BC patients (n = 121) and healthy age-matched controls (n = 149) were entered into the study. Iron and antioxidant vitamins intakes were estimated using a quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Thirty one subjects from each group provided blood samples for measurement of serum iron, plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) and ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP). Total and non-heme iron intake of BC patients were lower than those of the controls. However, the serum iron level was significantly higher in BC patients. Plasma MDA levels were also significantly higher in BC patients whereas no significant difference in FRAP values were observed between the two groups. Log-transformed serum iron concentration showed no significant correlation with MDA or FRAP. These results suggest that serum iron overload may be a breast cancer risk factor possibly due to increased oxidative stress

Dual priming oligonucleotide system for the multiplex detection of respiratory viruses and SNP genotyping of CYP2C19 gene

Successful PCR starts with proper priming between an oligonucleotide primer and the template DNA. However, the inevitable risk of mismatched priming cannot be avoided in the currently used primer system, even though considerable time and effort are devoted to primer design and optimization of reaction conditions. Here, we report a novel dual priming oligonucleotide (DPO) which contains two separate priming regions joined by a polydeoxyinosine linker. The linker assumes a bubble-like structure which itself is not involved in priming, but rather delineates the boundary between the two parts of the primer. This structure results in two primer segments with distinct annealing properties: a longer 5′-segment that initiates stable priming, and a short 3′-segment that determines target-specific extension. This DPO-based system is a fundamental tool for blocking extension of non-specifically primed templates, and thereby generates consistently high PCR specificity even under less than optimal PCR conditions. The strength and utility of the DPO system are demonstrated here using multiplex PCR and SNP genotyping PCR
